This spring’s was the most extensive #SWOGonc virtual meeting yet, featuring 60 sessions for nearly 1,300 registered attendees.
If you missed the SWOG Front Line group meeting preview, that’s a great place to start for all things planned throughout the 5-day conference. In addition, the full meeting site and related session materials are still available for retrospective consumption.
Below are some of the highlights organized by The Hope Foundation or featuring our outstanding grant recipients:
Dr. Veena Shankaran Presented on S1912CD
We were especially excited to watch Thursday’s session to preview the launch of S1912CD, a financial toxicity study with roots in Dr. Shankaran’s Coltman Fellowship. This study follows her earlier SWOG trial, S1417CD.
With a better understanding of the financial toxicity problem, Dr. Shankaran will now test a solution. In S1912CD, patients and their spouses will get help navigating the costs of cancer care. The study will determine whether financial education and counseling lessens the burden of treatment. – SWOG Front Line
We’re so pleased to see Dr. Shankaran furthering her work since completing her fellowship through Hope, and we’re eager to learn how S1912CD may benefit patients and their families.
We Previewed Our Next Virtual Symposium
SWOG and The Hope Foundation, in collaboration with Genentech and additional future funders, are launching an initiative with partners across the NCI National Clinical Trials Network as a multi-phased – and ultimately multi-year – program to share, model, replicate, and test interventions that have been shown to successfully increase minority and underserved representation in, and access to, cancer clinical trials.
To kick off the initiative in its first year, a 2-hour virtual symposium on May 21 will provide an opportunity for information gathering and shared learning, and will serve as a springboard for research ideas to test promising accrual strategies across network sites.
Funding for five pilot studies will be offered in late 2021 through The Hope Foundation.
We Crushed The Crab
To gear up for the spring meeting, Hope again organized a virtual fun run/walk to benefit SWOG research and offer members a chance to come together in forward motion. As in the fall, numerous 5K participants completed their journeys and shared thoughts – and thanks – via our Tribute video collection.
Staff Mingled Virtually In The Networking Lounge
Following the first full day of group meeting, staff from across the group’s core offices in Portland (GCO), Seattle (Stats & Data Management), San Antonio (Operations), and Ann Arbor (The Hope Foundation/CTP) gathered in the new networking space to catch up on the past six months of life and shared work. While we missed the hors d’oeuvres and in-person interaction, the virtual space provided a fun experience, allowing individuals to move from table to table in the true spirit of a mingle.
