Improving Participation Of Diverse Populations In Clinical Trials

Background

In spring 2021, we kicked off this NCORP-focused initiative with a 2-hour virtual symposium for information gathering and shared learning, serving as a springboard for research ideas to test promising accrual strategies across network sites.

The symposium featured 2 rounds of site presentations, each followed by a brief panel discussion. Participating sites included: (session 1) Hawaii Minority Underserved NCORP, Upstate Carolina NCORP, Columbia University MU NCORP, Montefiore Medical Center MU NCORP; and (session 2) New Mexico MU NCORP, Stroger Hospital of Cook County MU NCORP, Puerto Rico MU NCORP, Baptist Memorial Healthcare/Mid South MU NCORP.

Minority/Underserved Recruitment Initiative: A Pilot Grant Program For Improved Outreach & Accrual

Awards are made from this pilot grant program to foster improved representation of under-resourced populations in cancer clinical trial accrual. Grants from the program are issued through a competitive, peer-reviewed process, and projects are funded for up to $50,000 (direct costs) and may be spent over a 1- or 2-year award period. Indirect costs are limited to a rate of 25%. The source of these funds is nonfederal.

Program Objectives

Fundable project proposals should:

  • Establish infrastructure or test an intervention to improve access for underrepresented population(s);
  • Strive to remove structural barriers (e.g., policies, protocol-specific);
  • Be action-oriented and measurable (vs. descriptive);
  • Challenge and seek to shift current research or clinical practice paradigms;
  • Describe how the effort will be communicated to patients and other stakeholders;
  • Be scalable for potential application at sites across the NCTN/NCORP.

Not fundable: Any proposal which solely seeks validation of an existing problem.
