A mentoring Intervention for Advanced practice providers across the National Clinical Trials Network:

The nCTN MAPP Program

Oncology Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), including Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Clinical Nurse Specialists are highly trained health care providers who contribute significantly to quality cancer care. The number of APPs has exploded over the last ten years, and these clinicians provide much of the clinical care for cancer patients and are experts in symptom management and care coordination.

Recent benchmarking data from a national survey of APPs attitudes, beliefs, and roles within clinical trials report that APPs are not utilized to their full scope of practice. This study also found that APPs are interested in becoming more involved in clinical trials. 

The MAPP program is a year-long mentoring intervention designed to engage APPs with SWOG and the National Clinical Trials Network through direct guidance from an experienced peer-mentor.

The program includes completion of the focused SWOG APP Workshop – currently available via SWOG’s online learning management system – and 5 mentoring sessions for each mentee over 12 months. The first session will be delivered as 1:1 mentor-to-mentee. The additional 4 sessions will be done as learning collaboratives, 1 mentor:3 mentees.

Travel: In-person attendance at 2 SWOG group meetings, as well as 1 additional professional meeting, will be required for participation in this program. Travel will be funded directly by The Hope Foundation.
